Blu is back with another Android phone for American consumers who prefer unlocked life. The Blu R1 Plus includes a large screen and an even larger battery. You can choose to use your phone at AT & T or T-Mobile, with support for up to two phone numbers thanks to the dual SIM card slots. If you are looking for a flexible networked smartphone, the R1 Plus handles the basics. Here is the in-depth review of Phone Scoop.

Is it your type?

Blu sells cheap and unlocked smartphones directly to consumers, usually through online outlets such as Amazon.com. The R1 Plus is a bigger and worse version of the R1 HD thanks to a larger screen and a higher capacity battery. If you are looking for an unlocked Android phone with a large screen, the R1 Plus is one of many options.

Body

Blu is in a design routine. Almost all the phones that the company has announced in recent months have a similar (yes, identical) appearance. The front has 2.5D curved glass, while the back panel is defined by a gray metal plate, gray plastic end caps and chrome accents. It's a good look, but Blu is quickly losing any sense of individuality with this recycled design language.

A large black glass slab forms the front surface of the R1 Plus. The glass is curved very slightly along the four edges, which helps the feeling of being in contact. The back of the phone is perhaps 80% metal and 20% plastic. The chrome accents extend from side to side at the top and bottom edges and separate the metal part of the back panel from the plastic ends. The gray of the metal does not match the gray of the plastic, but this seems to be a theme in Blu phones. Like many contemporary Blu phones, the R1 Plus has a conservative appearance that could almost be called elegant.

The 5.5-inch screen needs a fairly large footprint. Thick bevels do not help. The R1 Plus is a large phone, there is no other way to describe it. It is more than 6 inches tall, more than 3 inches wide and a huge 0.43 inches (10.5mm) thick. Blu curved the back panel where it reaches the side edges and this helps to push the phone a little in the palm of your hand. People with smaller hands may not feel comfortable using the R1 Plus. It is often a two-handed device. The size, thickness and weight make it the R1 Plus, a brick in your pocket. It will fit your pants, but you will always know it is there.

The materials are on par with other Blu phones, but they do not reach phones with similar prices from Samsung, LG, Motorola and others. The glass front feels good and is firmly mounted in a thin plastic frame. I'm not in love with the way Blu stuck the back panels to the outer plastic frame. Like many Blu phones, the chrome bands are grooved and have sharp edges that cut against your skin. The materials may not be the best, but the R1 Plus seems to be well assembled and all seams are tight.

I always like to see a solid, seamless piece of black glass on phones. The screen and frames disappear with each other with the screen off. It is quite easy to choose the user-oriented LED flash and the user-oriented camera. Blu chose the on-screen buttons to interact with the Android operating system, so the only design element visible on the face of the phone is the Blu chrome logo, which is painted along the chin.

The screen lock key and the volume control are on the right. The screen lock button is more of a button and measures only a couple of millimeters in length. Fortunately it has a ribbed texture and a clear profile. The volume lever is quite thin, but its length helps a lot. The buttons are easy to find without looking. The trip and the feedback are good. The 3.5mm headphone jack is on top and the microUSB port is on the bottom.

I like the shape of the rear panel of the R1. Like many other Blu phones, the R1 is thicker along the central vertical axis and narrows to the sides.
